Refining searches

Suppose you were only interested in French loan words used by Jane Austen that appeared in English in the 18th century.

It would be possible to order the results by entry date and scroll through them until you reached the right century, but the Advanced Search page allows you to compile a list of just those words.

On the Advanced Search page, enter a search for '1700-1799', select 'earliest date' as the search area, and check the box labelled 'Restrict search to results of'.

At the foot of the Advanced Search page is a list of the most recently performed searches. Use the radio buttons to restrict the search to the previous search, for 'Entries containing "Austen" in author and "French" in language names'

This time, the results list is much smaller.
