Combining searches

The Advanced Search page contains three search boxes, connected by Boolean operators which can be selected from a pull-down list.

Each box has its own search area, which means that terms in different search areas can be matched together, either within the same entry or within the same quotation.

The selection of entry or quotation is made using the tabs at the top of the Advanced Search page, labelled ENTRIES and QUOTATIONS.

To search for quotations from The Times published in the 1960s, the QUOTATIONS tab should be selected and the terms 'Times' and '1960-1969' entered into the first two search boxes, in the search areas 'quotation work' and 'quotation date' respectively, and with the Boolean operator 'AND' selected.

To search for words used by Jane Austen that originated in French, the ENTRIES tab should be selected and the terms 'Austen' and 'French' entered into the first two search boxes, in the search areas 'quotation author' and 'language names' respectively, and with the Boolean operator 'AND' selected
