Tour: Beyond words
Search areas
In the previous section, all the searching you saw was performed on the defined words and phrases themselves, rather than on the whole entries which contain them. In this part of the tour, you'll see how the other information in the entries can be searched, including the quotations illustrating the senses of each entry. The search form is brought up by clicking on Simple Search... at the bottom of the screen, and this lets you search the full text of the Dictionary.
In addition, it gives you the choice of restricting your search area to definitions, etymologies, language names, quotations, or the various parts of them, by changing the default option of 'full text' to one of these other text areas. You can even enter a year and find all words whose earliest recorded use was in that year.
