Using proximity searching to find a phrase

Aim: to find references to edible mushrooms

A simple search on the fixed phrase edible mushroom may not find all references to edible mushrooms in the dictionary, because in some entries this exact form of the term may not occur. To retrieve all entries which contain the words edible and mushroom, a proximity search is more appropriate.

  1. Open the Full Text search panel by clicking [Show Simple Search form].

  2. Type edible into the input box.

  3. Make sure full text is selected from the search area list box.

  4. Click the [Show extra search options] button to reveal the proximity search options.

  5. Type mushroom into the bottom input box.

  6. Choose section from the list box.

  7. Make sure the before or after radio button is selected. (Your terms will be found in any order.)

  8. Click [Perform Full Text search] to start the search.

  9. The results list is displayed.

The search finds not only the term edible mushroom, but also edible separated from mushroom, for example in the entry for hedgehog.

  10. To go to the top of any entry, click its name (in the left-hand column). To go to the first match in any entry, click the matching term (in the right-hand column).
