Case-sensitive searching

Aim: to find occurrences of the programming language BASIC

A standard Full Text search for basic will find the acronym BASIC, and also examples of the ordinary word basic. To find only BASIC, case-sensitive searching must be used.

  1. Open the Advanced search page by clicking [Show Advanced Search form] .

  2. Make sure the entries tab is selected.

  3. Type BASIC into the first input box.

  4. Select full text from the corresponding search area list box.

  5. In the panel to the right of the search form, click the checkbox labelled ‘Case-sensitive searching’.

  6. Click [Perform Advanced search] to start the search.

  7. The results list is displayed. This includes examples of BASIC, but none of Basic or basic.

  8. To go to the top of any entry, click its name (in the left-hand column). To go to the first match in any entry, click the matching term (in the right-hand column).

Although author names are displayed in small capitals, they are treated as lower case (apart from the initial letter), so a case-sensitive search for GREENE will not match the auther name GREENE.
